passover

so tonight i had seder (passover) with friends.

the hard thing about passover, is realising, how much i missed out on, as a child.

I was raised by an atheist jewish family, and during passover i realise how much i missed out on.

it's not the religion, its the ritual, and this makes me sad.

So in todays age, is this Register for gay, de facto couples

Great i thought firstly, but then there two things in the article, that made me angry, or pissed off.

the first was the lack of been able to do a ceremony, during the singing of this registry.

The second was this quote from the "Family Council of Victoria" (needless to say the use of family in their organizations name is a dead give away,) "same-sex and de facto couples already had the same rights as married couples." then a whole load of bullshit about slippery slopes.

But what pissed me off, is according the Family Council of Victoria, think i and Hannah have the same rights as a married couple, i'm thinking of giving the family council of victoria, a call and asking them why if i have the same rights, is immigration so difficult?

I'm just over it, at least we can get a CP in the uk (here) and have a ceremony and all, but then it's not recognized here. It just makes me sick, but then there is little that's going to change.

solaris fun

  • Dec. 2nd, 2007 at 9:50 PM

Well, finally managed to get Solaris 10 installed on my Sparc box. I found the issue that was causing the kernel panic on install, it seems that it was due to using a ps/2 mouse and keyboard which this box supports. Using a proper sun keyboard and mouse combo it installed with no issues.

I didn't really expect this machine to be that quick, been only a 300MHz sparc IIi, and with 256MB of ram, but it's not too bad, even running the "java desktop" (which is a badge engineered version of gnome.)

It's been a while since I've played with solaris, I used to be an admin, running some solaris 7 & 8 boxes a while ago, and had forgotten some of the weirdness with Solaris and it's weird path names (/opt/* and /var/sadm for example) but it's nowhere near an odd UNIX compared say to IRIX (ifconfig in /etc for crying out loud.)

But so far I have to say Solaris 10 is an improvement and Gnome is a better wm than CDE (ugh, i've always hated CDE with a passion, even though 4dWM is based on the same toolkit, CDE manages to do it in such an ugly fashion.)

Right now I'm just installing some freeware, there are two good sources for freeware for Solaris, the good old sunfreeware, www.sunfreeware.com, which i used in my sol 7 and sol 8 days, and now a new source of freeware that i've found www.blastwave.org which has a pkg-get based resource, which makes working out dependencies a lot easier, as pkgadd doesn't tell one about dependencies, tho pkgrm does (go figure that one out.)

I do really need to get some more ram for this little box, but so far so good. At least it's nice having more non X86 boxes here.

anyway, take care.

weird memories....

  • Oct. 18th, 2007 at 10:51 AM
corset
This is an odd one, but a number of years ago I worked for a small ISP called Internet Access Australia.

I was talking to [info]hannahphonics about the one of the IP ranges I used to administer, and I started remembering the machine names.

what i can remember.

was firstly:

Heimdall.iaccess.com.au
and
Sleipnir.iaccess.com.au

These two machines were my babies, the primary and secondary name servers, also heimdall did the radius authentication and kept tabs on how long the customers were on for, also it did new account registration via a modem plugged in the back.

These machines originally ran BSDi when i started at iaa, and BSDi was probably the first UNIX i really cut my teeth on, now due to these copies not been licenced, we were unable to get the y2k Patches for these machines. We decided to move to freeBSD, we had a number of other machines running freeBSD there. I will get on to those later.

So I built the new boxes, installed freeBSD, converted the zone files from bind 4.x.x to bind 8.x (in the end i scripted this, as some of the scripts we were able to find, just did an awful job of the zone files.)

Now the time accounting software, that was hairy, it was written for a really old version of perl, and i mean old, so we had make lots of changes. Not my idea of fun when my understanding of perl was bloody awful.

But in the end the machines were installed in November of 1999 after much testing.

Back on to the other names....

Loki.iaccess.com.au was our mail server, i cursed lokis name more than once, and especially when loki went down and it took me something like 18 or so hours to get it back running.

The other machines, i can't really remember, there was frig, freya, iord, asgard, and so on.

oh well,

I still miss Heimdall and Sleipnir.
